I have the same problem. Deleting the drives doesn't help - comes back in the same state. I have 3 drives; two (DVD and CD/RW) are internal and are completely hosed; one (DVD burner) is firewire and seems to be ok, but doesn't show up in Windows Explorer. I'm running W2K - any ideas on how to fix the registry?

Help!
I guess I'm not alone on this problem. I've tried system restore, but it seems this problem was dated back past the earliest system checkup. I've unplugged, re-plugged anything and everything... nothing. Please! I'm running out of ideas here!
