The CD/DVD drive of our Packard Bell Pulsar 500 constantly accesses a CD-ROM that haas been left in the drive. The PC won't do anything (has been turned off & on again a number of times)except spin the CD-ROM. The monitor displays "no signal".
The drive won't open with power on or off even when removed from PC. Any ideas on either how I can open it or get the PC to boot.
BTW the drive is Samsung SD-606 and has been a constant pain - it appears to conflict with the sound card.

Most cdrom drives have a small hole on the front. An unfolded paper clip, pushed through this hole, will usually hard eject the cd tray.

Brilliant - thanks - have got CD-ROM out BUT PC still goes into CD access mode on switching on and will do nothing but flash the CD-ROM drive light and whirr. Video reports "test mode" then no signal.

Failing the paper clip trick, remove the ribbon from the back of the drive but leave the 'four wire' power supply connected. When you start the PC, press the eject button & the draw will pop open.
You have to open up the PC case for this trick.

Sounds like something besides the CDROM is bad. Disconnect all cables from the back of the CDROM. See if problem persists. My guess is that it will. You can keep removing accesorries (PCI cards, memory, etc.) to try to isolate what's wrong but my advice is to just go buy something besides a Packard Bell.
Good luck!

When your computer boots tap the Delet key(not backspace but delete) or "F2". This should bring you into the BIOS config screen and let you change boot options.

Have now got an old CD-ROM drive from work abd connected it instead of suspect one. Have removed and replaced battery. Have removed and replaced memory. Fault still persists. Nothing else to remove so far as I can see except for modem and scanner cards. Should I try these?
Neither F2 or F8 on power up does anything. The PC just accesses the CD merrily whilst the monitor displays no signal.
Help?

If you are getting a no signal on your monitor, its not the CDROM. You need to unplug your video card and plug it back in with some force. I got a new computer that shipped with a loose video card inside and it took me two days to figure out why i was getting no signal. Your monitor is not even connected to the computer. However, you should be able to press the eject button on the CDROM when the power is on even if you have something up with your video card connection. Seriously try this. Those cards need to be in tight.
