Hi, I recently aqquired a ThinkPad 390X. And put Windows 95 on it through Floppies, as the CDROM device wont boot. Windows 95 works great on it except for when I try to install say Office 95 or even just run a burnt disc the CDROM drive only detects it as CD Audio. I've tried Windows 98 (which was originally on it) Win Xp which somehow luckily I got it on, and all those OS's do the same thing. I tried an old laptop CDROM drive I got and Windows 95 just starts messing up with it. What could it be? I tried 2 different drivers, 1 from when I installed 95 and one direct from IBMs site for the Drive it self. Could it be the CDROM drive is shot? Or the internal hardware, or just the drivers that I am using?

Older CDroms had limited capabilities as far as what type of media they could access. Most early versions can't read even CDR. This is understandable because there weren't any burners around back then. I can't say if this is your problem or not.

can you reconfigure that drive in the BIOS/Setup? is it on 'auto' can you tell the BIOS specifically what it is?
(bit of a longshot)

Yeah, I just tried cleaning the lens and it still doesnt work, I have acctually tried both CDR and ROM and they both dont work. I cant configure the BIOS automatically because its an IBM thing on it. But thanks for all the help if anyone else had this problem please let me know. thanks!

I have seen this fix posted here numerous times, I don't run XP so I didn't add it to my support files.

It sounds to me like the drive isn't recognised or is dead. Check the BIOS to see if it show up there and watch the POST screens at startup to see if it is shown there.

Alright I checked everything and the post screen does infact detect the CDROM drive and so does the MSCDEX driver i got going but it doesnt work either, But that shot in the dark idea, what does the ASPI have to do with it and how do i check it?
Thanks For all the help so far.

First of all, be sure that the CD you are using to test with is good. Try a factory CD, like WinXP. See if you can read that.

Hi again, I have tried the Original XP disc , brand new games, nothign has worked on that side, I have done some more research to the post that Mechanix gave me, about the ASPI, and I found a post talking about EZ-SCSI which I am downloading and trying, hopefully it works but anyother ideas would be great! Thanks again for all your help this place rocks! :D

dan,
Get ASPICHK here:
http://www.golden-triangle.com/aspichk.exe
It will tell you the installed version.
Oddly, the 4.7x will not work but 4.6x often will.

Alright I used that program and it says ASPI is properly installed and fully operational but no host adapters detected. What now?? Thanks for all the help!

Take a look at this thread. This is about the upper & lower filter I referred to earlier.
