Hello. The CD-ROM drive in my computer is recognized by Windows and the BIOS, but whenever I insert a CD into the drive, it wouldn't read it. It would either not spin or spin with the drive light on, but the drive light stays on, the drive makes a funny noise, and it still wouldn't read. The only way I could get the drive to read the CD is to shake or hit it repeatedly for a while, but that doesn't work all the time and the drive could fail in the middle of something. Is there any way to fix this problem without buying another CD-ROM drive? Thanks in advance.

There is no repair for a CD drive. They are sealed and opening it will not give access to any sevicable parts. It is not worth the shop time to try fixing it. The only choice is to replace the drive. At least this gives you an option for a better drive, DVD, DVD-RW or anything you want.
Good luckRichard

Richard is right.
The most common cause of failure of a CD drive is the bearings on the drive motor have trashed themselves, and it cannot reliably spin fast enough, or it won't spin at all.A tip for you - your CD drive is spun by Windows a lot even when you are not using it, just in case you might want to access it, sometimes even when no LED is lit up. It is partly for this reason that no CD drive is warrantied for more than a year anymore. Your CD drive will last much longer if you always take out the CDs when you are not using them.

are you in the uk or us. drives arent expensive you can pick one up cd rw or dvd for about £18 gbp in the uk from ebuyer
