My desktop's CD-ROM door won't open via button. Reads disc that is stuck inside. Green light flashes inside door when button is pushed, but drawer won't open. Thanks for any advise!

Look for a small hole somewhere on the front of the drive. Straighten a paper CLIP of the right size, insert it in the hole until it makes contact, then push...the drawer *should* open.

EDIT: added CLIP as per OtheHill

jam's suggestion should work. If it doesn't reboot. If that still doesn't work, open the case and reseat the CD drive.

As per #1, that is a PAPER CLIP.

odds are the mechanics in the drive are just dying, and there's not much you can do to revive it.

good thing optical drives are like, $20.

You may find a paper clip is not strong enough for the task as the metal can be quite soft.

I use the thickest needle or watchmakers screwdriver that will fit in the hole.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

Thanks JAM, JeniferSUMN, OtheHill,UpandComing, and
MikeNewcomb.
Appreciate the quick response.
Got the drawer open via thin wire and screwdriver (door wouldn't "pop" open). Closed again and sthe same thing happened. Guess you're right, mech.'s shot. Any recommendations on best site to buy a replacement, and any ones better than others?
Thanks again, I have a more challenging question I would apprec some help with. I'll post it after dinner and a cocktail!

I buy almost all my hardware at newegg.com.

The link below seems to be the only Beige IDE they have listed.

The link below is for all the Burners they have. You most likely need IDE as opposed to SATA. Post back with your choice before buying.

It could just be that the drive shifted in the bay, losing contact, and making it impossible for the drive to open when you push the button to open. Open the case and reseat the drive, making sure it's pushed as far forward as possible.
