The CD-ROM doesn't appear in any file under "My Computer" and it doesn't read any type of cd. The tray opens and I put a cd inside but won't read it. As to the DVD-ROM tray doesn't open and the drive doesn't appear in "My Computer" either. What can I do?

Ummm. Check to see that the cords in the back are plugged in correcty. Sounds like your just getting power. Do you have the driver for the dirve? If so try that. Bios... When your computer is booting, (logo screen) press F2, (HP is f2 right???)

Start your computer and hopfully your mintor will completly turn on before it's too late since you have to press a key on your keyboard to get into Bios. Either F2, DEL or Ctrl+Alt+S. It should tell you for a few seconds before windowsXP boots. Once you get into the bios (which is usualy blue), without changing any settings, look around and find Primary Master, that could be your Hard Drive, Secondary Master and Secondairy Slave should be your CD-ROM. If beside the Secondary Master/Slave there is "None" change them to "CD-ROM" and restart your comptuer to get back into WindowsXP and look in My Computer. If there's still nothing, go into Control Panel and double click on "System" then the "Hardware" tab then "Device Manager". Double click the "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" and see if there's a confict of any sort or if both of your drives are in the list, if not, the IDE cabled for your CD-ROM could of slipped out a little perhaps durring transportation. All you need to do for this is open up your tower making sure the power is turned off and push the wide grey cable attached to the back of your drives and follow those grey cables to the motherboard and push the other end in as well. After this is complete, try botting WindowsXP once again. Let us know how it goes.

Seagate 160Gig SATA
MSI Radeon x800 PCI-E
Antec TrueControle 2.0 550 Watts

What happened prior to this? Has the computer been moved or monkeyed with? Has it always been this way? Is it normal in all other regards?
You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

I have the same problem with my laptop. I have tried what you have advised but even after the re-installation the laptop cannot see the devise... I have never had this situation before as well as my laptop was most of the time completely normal. The only thing which may be a problem is that i have waped it up at one of the pc shops and it was alright untill when I have installed all the files back (none of them were with virus - i have checked). So what should i do know? Wipe it up again? Your advices would be really appreciated!Valentina
