CD/DVD-RW Combo does not work at startup...

Specs: Windows XP, Celeron 2.6GHz/1GB/PowerPC750 "Arthur" (G3) 400MHz/512MB
...but works after putting the computer to sleep and waking it up again. My laptop's original CD drive worked until one of the internal cables (in the CD drive) broke free of it's connector. Now, at startup, the computer generates an error by the name of 'IDE #1 ERROR". When I the laptop in to sleep, then open it up again to 'wake it up'. After that, the drive enumerates, and is ready for work. Why is the CD not working at startup, but after I wake up the computer from sleep mode?

Kind of hard to tell. As you say a "sleep" ought to have more problems getting to work rather than fixing it.

Might boot to a live cd either barts or even Vista/W7 dvd or Linux to see if the drive works at boot really. Is so then we can assume some issue with hardware.

As to the fix I could only guess a try at the xp "repair" but then you have to reload apps. The only for sure way might be to clean install it but that takes time.
