CD/DVD Rom Doesn't Recognize CDs on Satellite

Specs: Windows Vista

I have a Satellite A135-S4656 running Vista Home Basic. The dvd/cd drive recognizes and plays DVDs. It also works fine with writable CDs. The problem comes when I want to use a purchased CD to install software. The computer seems to view them as blank CDs. I have done the following trouble shooting to eliminate some possible problems: I tried several CDs with the same results. I tried those CDs in another computer and they worked fine. I tried the CDs using an external CD drive. They are not recognized with that either (although writable CDs are - just like with the internal drive). I alse reinstalled the cd/dvd driver and that didn't work either.

I don't think the problem is with the actual drive, since both the internal and external drives are acting the same

I thought maybe if I did a system recovery to factory condition might help, but I can't do that without a CD. I don't know if there wasn't one included with my computer or if it has been misplaced. If I had one it wouldn't be recognized anyway. Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I realize I forgot to add that this is a Toshiba computer. Again, any help would be appreciated.
