I have a dvd-rom and a dvd-writer. When I boot up I get about a 1 minute pause before the "welcome to windows" screen in XP. During that time the dvd-rom blinks as if it is constantly being accessed. If push the eject button windows immediately proceeds to load.
My biggest problem though, which I believe is tied in with this is that about 1 every 24 hours I get a blue screen with no error message or stop error. In the event viewer (system) under computer management in XP, at the time of the crashes I have messages like:
"The device, \Device\CdRom3, is not ready for access yet" and "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom1." and "The device, \Device\CdRom1, has a bad block."
Could these problems be due to master, slave setting not correct? Or maybe some driver software update needed?

Do you have both drives using the same IDE channel (i.e., on the same cable attached to the motherboard)? If so, you might want to rearrange that so that each CD/DVD drive is on a different channel - one on primary and the other on secondary. And, yes, you should check the jumpers to make sure they are set properly.

Use master or slave jumper...do not use cable select. DVD-ROM should be primary slave, DVD burner should be 2ndary master

Ok, right now they are both on the same IDE cable. I'll try switching the setup to what jam suggests.
