Specs: Windows XP, 1 gig ram
In my laptop is a burner: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4084N.

Last week I was burning some movies ( made using Windows Movie Maker) I had converted them to dvd mode. The next day, I went to make a cd of pictures I had stored on Photobucket. The burner will not work. I sent this thing back twice already (when it new) for not being able to recognize a disk.

Is there anything I can do short of having to buy a new player/burner? I already deleted it in Device Manager and restarted the computer. Didn't change anything.

The programs I used were: Zilisoft DVD Creator and then Record Now for the pictures.

try to burn data or audio using different burning software. Does your dvd writer read dvd or cd?

I used Real Player to burn a song from my external hard drive; was fine. I downloaded Express Burn and made a data disk; was fine. I then played a music cd from my collection and it worked. I opened a disk I had letter files on and that was fine.

I played a dvd video from my collection; it was fine, also.

So, I tried to burn a dvd from my hard drive. I guess it loaded all right, but when it came to burning, it said the disk was not empty. It was a brand new disk. I even bought HP dvd disks, to avoid any problems.

When I put in another blank dvd disk, it said it was burning and the player door opened and I got a message to close the door. You could hear the drive working and when it was done, all I had was an audio_ ts and a video_ ts file, but they were empty.

I am having trouble opening the door to the drive, but that has been ever since I bought this laptop. Compaq sees no problem, yet can duplicate the "no disk in drive".

And, the drive is noisy when it is reading some disks.

I cannot afford a new drive, and as unviolent as am, I might try to shove this laptop...should I ever find a compaq maker.

What else can I do now?

Thank you for your help. My brother bought me a Liteon external burner.
