So i have an infamous HP pavilion slimline s3400f, and a while ago the dvd drive stopped reading or writing. It turns on, but when you click "DVD drve: E:\" in My Computer, it just comes up with "insert disk into drive E:\". Any suggjestion ideas? I have tried doing the registry fix with the upper and lower filters, and Microsoft FixIt, and neither have worked. Thanks in advance!

Has it stopped reading both CD and DVD media?

Is the drive identified by the correct model in Device Manager?

Did you remove the upper & lower filters?

Did this happen all at once?

Have you recently installed or uninstalled and burning or scanning software?

Yes, both cd and dvd media,

Yes and no, i do not know the model number as it is an OEM disk drive, so it is just a bunch of random letters.

Yes, like i said in my first post, i removed the filters, even though it was just the bottom

Yes, the disk drive just stopped, and hasn't worked since

And No, the hasn't been any software installed

✔ Best Answer
Check the cable connections and install a substitute cable if available.

If you have a bootable disk of some sort then try booting to it to determine if the issue is with the drive or Vista. You can always abort any installation that starts.
