CD/DVD drive not reading disks

My CD/DVD drive is not reading audio or picture disks. Any idea what may be wrong and how to fix it?

How old is the drive and what happens when you try to dead CD media? Can you read DVD media?

no, it's not playing either. The computer itself I've had since January so it's relatively new.
Yesterday, everything was playing on it--CDs and DVDs and last night, it just stopped in the middle of a CD and hasn't worked since. The music and stuff that I already have on my computer still plays so it's not the speakers or my Media Player.
With a DVD, the Media Player will open up but does not play it. With a CD, it does nothing at all.

I got in the floor and put a disk in today and it sounds kinda like it's skipping. I cleaned the disk I put in before I put it in there so I know it's not due to a disk being dirty. It sounds like as it's turning, something causes a skip in it.
The green light keeps flashing on and off the whole time a disk is in there.
