Solved CD/DVD Drive isn't working properly on Toshiba laptop

June 7, 2012 at 11:26:55
Specs: Windows 7
My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5300. I have tried to download a new drive for it but couldn't find one anywhere. I also tried to upgrade it but it says its up to date. It won't read the discs. I did the microsoft hardware scan and it couldn't fix it. It said it was a code 19 problem but I've come to a point where I don't know what to do.

All CD/DVD drives are automatically given a generic driver which is built in to all versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista & Windows 7. That's why CD/DVD drive manufacturers don't supply Windows drivers any more, they aren't necessary.

Your problem may be caused by the "filters" entries in the Registry which need removing. Instructions here: http://www.ehow.com/how_5504897_fix...

I went through step 2 and cannot find the upperfilter or lowerfilter in the right section!

So i found the upperfilter nut not the lowerfilter. Then when I finished reading all the way throu the directions it said to uninstall the drive that doesn't work and to restart and as long as the device was still hooked up it would work, does it matter if the disc tray is built into the computer?

As a long shot try this:

Unplug the laptop from the mains. Remove the main battery. Hold the power off/on button down for at least 20 seconds. Put humpty together again, then see if this helps - I've known it fix some quirky issues.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Well, I accept it was a bit hopeful.

I'm not sure what you meant in #5 by:
"but i could find it on the scans i did".

Was there any "DVD/CD-ROM drives" entry at all in Device Manager? If so you have to expand it out to find your drive, then right click it to see "Uninstall".

If this only happened recently you could bite the bullet and try a System Restore to a date when it was working. It usually works out quite well, although you will need to re-install anything you've added since.

Otherwise I can't really add any more to the advice already given.

On the microsoft CD/DVD Drive scanner, it could recognize the drive and tell me it was not working properly. When I expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives it just has the device not the drive.

Hi Marie,

back to basics:-

a) have you tried cleaning the drive?

CD/DVD cleaning kits can be found at cheapo £1 stores.
Use one that comes with a small container of cleaning fluid.

b) disconnect/re-connect the drive's cables, at both ends if possible.
Often this disturbance remakes a dodgy contact.

Google is your friend in such matters. e.g. there is Code 19 information here:-

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findb...

Please advise back on progress.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.
