Not sure if anyone can help. I have a cd with pictures saved on it. JPEG format. Can open other disks without issue. Other computers can open this disk without problems. My drive does not recognize it at all. When I pu the cd in, the computer sounds like it is accessing it, but nothing ever opens, it never has an error, nothing. I tried to open the pictures from several different programs or windows explorer. I tried to check the properties on the disk. The drive does not acknowledge that there is even a disk in the drive. What could be the problem????
Thanks
JC

could just be a very old drive and not able to read certain types of burned media. go to the website of the the burner sw you used to make the cd and look for patches for older cd drives. been a while since I've seen somehting like this but it isnt all that uncommon.

cable is not loose. As Mike says, your cd drive should come with an upgradeable flash ROM chip. Since your drive is not reading this particular disc, check the drive manufactuer's Web site to see if it offers a firmware upgrade.

Load the offending CD into a machine which WILL read it and get the properties from it, it may not be written in a common format, failing that try CD Roller, I have purchased it because it appears able to read ANY CD/DVD format & recover the data. Lovely piece of software.

Try this.
If you are comfortable editing the registry:
Create a Restore point and back up the registry.Open regedit.
Look for;HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\SetControlClass.
Key name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data:[Delete all value data from upper and lower filters]
Note-Do not delete the key or the multi-string values. Delete only the data values.
Exit regedit and reboot.

Have not tried the reg edit -- will give that a shot today. The drive should not be the problem. The offending computer is the newest of all three at less than 1 year old. The files are written in a format that should open. The only difference I have found is that the two computers that I did get the cd to open both have windows 2000 professional. I have windows xp. Could that make a difference??
