Comment:

The CD rom hs failed on my DELL GX 150, small desktop.
As a new one from Dell is expensive I was thinking of buying a new CD rom or DVD and using it externally. How would I connect it to my PC and would there be any problems with me doing that.
Many thanks

I would get an external DVD multi-format drive using USB 2.0 or IEE1394(Firewire)technology. Just be sure there is an available PCI slot in your computer for adding a firewire or USB 2 card if your mainboard does not already have support for this. These drives are not cheap. You can also find an external cd-rom drive, but if you use anything but USB 2 or Firewire, the data transfer/read rate will be too slow. Check out Newegg.com or Mwave.com.

Whats wrong with getting an internal one?

They are much cheaper.

I would have thought the internal fittings and fixings are the same as Dell.
Though I know some manufacturers have bespoke connectors and fixings, I hardly think they will on this item.

jim,

This is a SFF (small form factor) computer and I imagine it uses a laptop type cd-rom.
And they are expensive, especially from Dell or Compaq.
