Does anyone know what causes a CD drive to go bad and can you fix them.
My computer detects the drive but will no longer read a cd, it says insert cd.
I have cleaned the drive with a Cleaning CD, is there anything else a person can do to repair a drive or do you just throw them away? I would like to know how to fix them.

CD-ROM drives are mechanical gadgets that use electronics(laser etc.) to read CD's. If the drive has a lot of use and wear from playing games etc. it can go bad in less than a year.Change it for a new one,it is cheap:nobody repairs PC components anymore. You can do it yourself: put back sound, data and power cables in place and check that the jumper at the back is set to the same position you noticed at the back of the old unit being SL for slave or MS for master.Any new drive will do and Windows will readily detect the new one.40 pins is for EIDE drives and 50 pins is for SCSI drives:you make the choice.Good luck.
