whew, I've been looking for a solution to this very pesty problem, hope someone can help. I'm running Win95 with a Toshiba XM5702B CDROM assigned to drive D: but when I try to access it I get "D:\is not accessible the device is not ready". My config.sys Device=\winbak\command\TOSHIBA.SYS /D:MSCD000 /N:1 /P:220 and autoexec.bat PATH C:\winbak\command; (etc...) rem LH C:\winbak\command\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD000 where both the .SYS and .exe files do exist in \winbak\command, but also exist in several other directories??? No matter where I go to run MSCDEX.exe I get "MSCDEX version 2.95 already started". The light on the CD Drive face does activate when a CD is inserted, sometimes it flashes a few times and goes out, other times it just stays on indefinitely. Still no access. Can anyone help? Appreciate it.

The drive may be going bad. Check the ribbon cable carefully before deciding but be prepared for the worst.

Just try to wiggle it out, but firmly, make sure the pins are in place.

I have the same problems running under W98SE. The problem is the head with the laser-diode. It's sometimes stucked and can't get out of his position. The drive is then making a lot of noise (>> rpm). I have modified the (white) gearwheel in the middle of the laserhead guide so it's running smoother and had since then no more problems.
