Cd Rom does not recognise CD's

Specs: Windows XP
Cd rom all of a sudden will not read any disk i put. Have run scans (ok). System indicates that all is ok HELP

Do you have a bootable cd like the XP disk or restore disk? If so boot up with that. If it doesn't boot from the cd--be sure the cdrom is the first boot device in cmos/bios setup--then the cdrom is probably bad.

Well you should probably open the case and make sure the cdrom data cable is in good condition and tightly connected.

Thanks for that, however, when you put a cd in it fires up indicates that there is something on the disk (usage % left) but when you open it up there is nothing.

It happen once before and i found a web site that assisted me (similar to this one) by deleting certain parts of a program. (did not keep the website)

Are these burned cd's or 'store bought'? With burned cd's that can sometimes happen if the recording session isn't closed. I'm thinking that may be the case since it shows space left. A regular cd should show no space left.
