Comment:

I am using Toshiba A 100 Satellite, Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 gb ram. The system has been working fine before last about a week. Recently I have started facing a problem. Some CDs in my drive DVD/CD RAM Drive (Mats---a DVD RAM UJ 841-S) are readable whereas some are not. When i see properties of such CDs, all says that 702 MB are free and no data is present on the CD.Whenever i insert such CD, the writeable wizard automatically starts. I may be noted that i have tried these CDs on other computers and their whole data can be accessed. Surprisingly, I have not faced any problem with DVDs and All DVDs are easily read and whole data is accessed. I have also re-installed the system using recovery CD but the problem persists. I hope there are many competent people who can solve my problem or atleast give me guidance or atleast latest driver of my drive, compatible to my system. Thanks.

Try a lens cleaner CD in the drive - if that doesn't help......

All optical drives are sensitive as to which burnable media (CDs or DVDs, brands and types) you use in them - some drive models are a lot more picky that others.
Any optical drive should read a standard ("pressed") original CD, or DVD if that applies, fine, but it may only read SOME of the burned disks (or burnable disks if it doesn't have data on it yet) you try in it.

This problem has nothing to do with the drivers for the drive - in most cases the operating system only needs standard drivers already built into Windows.

Sometimes there are firmware updates available that will improve the range of media that can be recognized properly, but that won't cure problems with all burned media.

There are often lists of media known to work fine with a particular drive model on the optical drive manufacturer's web site, some media manufacturers have lists of optical drive models their media is known to work fine with, and some reviews of optical drive models on the web test various media on the model and tell you which works fine.

Your optical drive can be defective and not read ANY burned CD and/or DVD, or if you reload Windows from scratch from a regular CD or DVD, a burner CD or DVD drive will probably not be recognized properly and you won't be able to read ANY burned CD or DVD until you load the main chipset drivers for the mboard, but otherwise, if the drive can read SOME burned disks, there's nothing wrong with the drive or it's drivers.

Sometimes upper and lower filters cause this.

You can 'download guided help' at the Microsoft link below and run it.

Small 127kb program. Will not cause any problems.
