I installed a CD-burner on my PC running Win 98. It currently has a DVD installed. The problem now is that I am unable to use either drive. The PC hangs when I open "My computer" and when it eventually opens it knows both drives are present but will not read any data from them. If I switch to Dos it will read the disc in both drives. IDE cables are good and jumpers are set to secondary master and slave. The BIOS is configured to auto, and it detects both drives during boot. Even if I remove the burner and go back to DVD only it still will not read. I am at a loss. I can't even reformat.

If possible try installing the DVD on the primary channel as the slave and then the burner as the master on the secondary channel. Sometimes windows doesn't like two optical drives on one channel. One thing, you said the jumpers are set to secondary master and slave. I assume you mean just master and slave cabled as such(master on end of cable) on the secondary IDE channel. FYI, when going back to DVD alone the jumpering was probably incorrect for that configuration.

I did set the DVD back to it's orginal config. It was actually set at end of cable and the jumper was on cable select. I have my suspisions about the driver but not sure. When I loaded on Nero software with the new burner I had to uninstall Easy CD creator to get it to work. My problem may lie in there but I'mnot sure.
