CD drives aren't recognized after formatting (old PBell Legend 418CD w/ 2 CD drives matsus---a CR-563-B

I'm a poor boy that likes to tinker... Been playing with computers since the Radio Shack
TRS-80.. plug it in to your tv and a cassette
tape player was the hard drive... I even had an
adapter for my typwriter to automatically print..!!! Of Course I had to type it first :)

Any whoo...I know enough about dos to really
screw stuff up ..and sometimes fix it back :)

My daughter is going to college and I was going to
let her take the ol PB , a nice monitor, and stuff
for her homework, and music.. Thought I'd upgrade
to win 98se so I fdisked... formatted.. and SYS ed
it.. Now it won't recognize my cd drives
(it has 2) so i cant load from the cd..

I loaded startup disk 1 folder from my Windows
CD from my nuther puter to a floppy.. It began
the install all the way up to restart mode , but
when it restarts i get a message DEVICE DRIVER NOT
FOUND : 'MSCD001' NO VALID CDROM DEVICE DRIVERS SELECTED.. I thought the 98 boot disk loaded
drivers for most cd drives ?? did the mscdex.exe
thing.. but it gave me somthin' like usage
mscdex.exe [/L ] [/L,S,D,R,V ] [D: (drive)]

( not exactly that but like it..)

? 1. What is my path supposed to look like ?
is the path in the autoexec.bat ?
or is it in config.sys...?

2. I went to the matsus---a site and
downloaded 56X_9X.exe
( it looked like the right one )
I executed it here and there..
and every where.. to no avail...

By now you probably got the picture,
I know enough to really goof it up,
Soooooooo... I KNOW how to get around,
But I need your help in educating me
as to the proper way to treat my
computers.

Here's the poop..
PB Legend 418CD 2cd drives , one
3 1/2 floppy 75 MHZ pentium.
2 matsus---a ( panasonic ) CR-563-B
drives. The C drive is a 1 gig unit.
Scandisk showed a clean report.
Does the 98se disk not have the right
driver to run those, or did I screw
something else up.?? I even tried
Laplink to transfer the CD straight
across but nope.. IS MSCD001 a driver,
and if it is.. will it work on those
cd drives ?? I think the panasonic site
mentioned something about some are
proprietary interface while others are
ATAPI...and I noticed the drivers listed
on the bootdisk were mostly atapi I
think. Could that be an issue ??
Below are a few of the drivers for those cd
drives i've downloaded.. I believe I've
got what I need to put it all back
together.. But I don't have a schematic
of how the whole thing assembles.. :)

My oldest daughter is in Iraq, My
youngest is graduating High School
in a few weeks !!! and I'm a single Dad
raising girls.... so you can see why I
have the "do it yourself" attitude..
GIRLS ARE EXPENSIVE...!!!

Any assistance will be GREATLY
appreciated... :)

Bob

try re-create the windows 98 startup disk...becasue some files might be missing on the startup disk and causing the cd-rom driver not to work
another thing you should do is open up your computer case and make sure the cable is propertly installed and power connector
go into bios and check your settings for the cd-rom and make sure everything are correct

if it still doesn't work, try replacing the cable or your cd-rom could be bad..
by the way, don't download any drivers from the internet for your cd-rom drives, because they are designed for windows 95 or early version fo operating systems.
good luck

Even though most cd-rom drivers are included in Win98 startup disk, some old cd drives still have to have drivers loaded. Unless the drivers have a batch file to configure config.sys and autoexec.bat , the simplist way that I know to load the old cd drivers is to temporarily connect a more up-to-date cd drive to the computer, load Win98, then use add hardware. And you probably do have the right drivers. But try the steps ryan gave you first it could be the bios settings or cables.
Hope that helps.

The CR-563 CD should be a 2x that runs off a soundcard.
You will need the SBCD.SYS driver.
Boot with a floppy and in DOS, make a new folder called C:\CDROM
Copy the SBCD.SYS file and MSCDEX.exe file to the new folder.
Do you know how to use COPY.CON to write up a new config.sys and autoexec.bat file ?

CONFIG.SYS should be
DEVICE=C:\CDROM\SBCD.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220

AUTOEXEC.BAT should be
C:\CDROM\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD001 /M:8 /L:D /V

Bonne chance
