trying to listen to a CD when a pop sounded. Now the CD is stuck and won't open. We tried to eject it manually and through the program. No luck. You can hear it trying to open.

Patience please - sometimes it takes more than *one minute*
Should be a small hole just below the tray - you poke a stiff piece of wire (like a straightened paper clip) into that to release the tray and allow it to be opened manually

All this repetition does little to speed up any responses.
No, probably not necessary- it's a manual process, the button is electrical in nature - the machine doesn't even need to be on.
Just poke the thing in, if you do it correctly, the tray should open slightly, and you can pull it open the rest of the way.
The drive might have sustained permanent damage - hard to say for certain

Sorry for the repetition. I'm new to this. Anyway, I poked it in, but the tray wouldn't budge. I also pushed the button to see if that would help. All that did was push the clip back and forth.

If you do it properly, you will feel a certain amount of resistance until the tray opens slightly - - you'll actually be pushing it open with the pin, ok?
In fact, it may be best to perform this operation with the machine powered off

ComputerHope has a page on it.

... there is a chance that the CD is wedged in so tightly that you will be unable to open the tray at all.
If that is the case, nothing short of removing & disassembling the drive will get the disc out, and it likely won't be in good condition (& perhaps the drive itself too)
I hope that's not it, but be prepared (just in case)
good luck

ok that worked, finally got it open, cd is in pieces and door is now stuck in open position. There are probably pieces wedging it open.
So now I need to learn how to remove the cd drive...but that will have to wait until tomorrow.
Thanks for your help!

Yeah, that does sound like the worst case scenario - - is it a high speed drive (52x or so)?
That's unfortunate, but removal is pretty straightforward - you just disconnect the data, power, and audio cable (if present), unscrew the 4 mounting screws and slide the drive out the front.
When replacing the drive, same thing but in reverse - take note of the jumper position on the old drive, and ensure the jumper on the new drive is the same, if you are connecting it to the same data (ribbon) cable as the original (master or slave)

I'm a novice when it comes to these things. I don't know if it's high speed or not. So I'll have to check that. But thanks for the info on replacing it

Oh, that's alright - I was just wondering if it was a 52 'speed' or 'spin' (the rating) - I dimly remember someone claiming that those are the most likely to have a CD break apart inside.
Bad luck anyhow, but remove & replace is a pretty simple operation - here's a short guide (with pictures)

I never had a cdrom break up a cd but I did have one in which the tray would open before the drive had spun down. It would shoot cd's across the room like mini frisbees.

Now that would be something to see
