cd drive reads but won't write

the cd drive will read cd's (text, pics, audio) but I can't record onto a new disc. every time I try it says "please insert a disc into drive d:". there already is a cd in the drive, then I click "ok" and nothing happens. I bought an external cd drive and hooked it up, but I have the same problem - reads okay but won't write to the disc. I hooked the external drive up to another computer to test, and it writes fine, so the problem is internal with this computer. any ideas? thanks in advance...
