Hi,
I have a client that has called me and said that their CD drive will not stay shut. Whenever they click the close button or push it in, it comes right back out.
Can people tell me:
1. Have you seen this before
2. If so, how did you fix it
3. Could it just be something wedged behind the drive that is not allowing it to shut.

I have a home DVD player that does the opposite thing in that the tray won't stay open long enough to load without holding it. I suspect this is due to a faulty micro switch. In your case the cover for the tray, which is removable on most drives, may be slightly misaligned. The cover slides upward when the tray is open. Take care to hold the tray securely when attempting to move the cover. One side MAY not be fully down.

There may be a broken piece of plastic or some other component has come loose inside the drive - e.g. if the drive tray has been accidently hit when open, or I've seen a couple of drives that had the cone or whatever that holds down the CD over the drive spindle when the drive is closed detach. E.g. if it's a internal desktop or external drive, you often have to remove the drive and take off it's cover to find that - I glued both of the cones back on sucessfully with epoxy.

Does this problem occur just when windows is running or does it alway occur, say if it's booted to dos or during posting? If it always does it then yeah, likely a hardware problem. If it only happens when windows is up then the problem is OS related--perhaps a virus.
As a hardware problem I've seen it happen when the lever switch is bad or if the tray is misaligned, as already mentioned.

Also - have the client check the current voltages in the bios Setup. If the 5v reading is more than 10% high, it is likely to damage the logic boards on floppy and CD drives first.

Yes I agree remember to use little screws to mount the CDdrive, longer ones will protude into the drive itself and may impair functions

Yep, it has been working for years so I doubt its screws.... Other responses, I will check all this stuff. Thanks heaps everyone.

"...it has been working for years..."
CD drives don't last forever.
If it is a desktop computer, and the cpu speed is above about 400mhz, you can get a new CD burner for under $40. CD ROM drives (reads, only) are less than that.
If the cpu speed is over 1 ghz or so, you can get a new DVD/CD multidrive that reads and burns both CDs and DVDs of all types for around $40.
(you will also need an 80 wire data cable for any drive DVD rated 16X and up - about $5 if you don't have one to connect it to).
If it is a laptop, replacement drives for older laptops are relatively cheap and available on the web.
