Hi,
I have a Compaq Presario Notebook with WinXP. The CD-R/RW drive is TEAC-DW224E. Lately when I put a cdrom, cdrw or an audio cd, it first makes some spinning sounds, a few clicks, but cannot recognize the cd. It managed to read only some cdr's. The device manager shows no problem. I tried, uninstalling/reinstalling the driver. There seems to be no new driver updates.
Any suggestions?

try uninstalling nero, then recordnow, etc. any cdrom related programs-i use to have that problem with nero6, but since upgrading to 7, it went away. also uninstalled udf reader that goes with recordnow. it was also causing problems--it got to where i was about ready to send drive for replacement, then discovered the above things-try it one by one

My guess is that the lens in the drive is getting dirty, doesn't take much, and it won't read some CDs. I have seen several drives that would act that way.
I think you can get a CD that is a cleaner and run it in your drive.Good Luck

I've uninstalled Roxio EasyCD creator, which was the only related program on my laptop. I then unistall/reinstalled the CDROM driver. I've also tried the cleaner CD. Nothing seems to work.
Do you have any other suggestions?
Is it too expensive to replace the CDRW drive on a laptop? My initial search for compaq CDRW's for my laptop resulted in very high prices.
