Hi, I have a Samsung DVD-ROM SD-616F & an HP CD-Writer cd16f. Both are coming up in device manager as Unknown with a yellow exclamation point and a Code 41 when I look at properties, thus the drivers are found but the hardware itself is not locatable? I have checked all connections and they seem secure. The DVD went out some time ago, but the CD-RW went out about 2 weeks ago after the computer crashed and shut itself off. It came back up with the CD-RW gone from the "My Computer" screen and the same problems as the DVD. I cannot find updated drivers for either drive, but somehow I don't think that is the problem. I have also tried a System Restore with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You don't need to install drivers for optical drives. When did you install SP2? How are the drives configured? If you only have 3...HDD, DVD, & CD burner, they should be configured as follows:

primary master = HDD w/OS
primary slave = DVD-ROM
2ndary slave = CD burner
2ndary slave = none (or 2nd HDD if you have one)

Always use master/slave jumpers, never use cable select.

To fix your issue try this:

Locate and delete the UpperFilters and or LowerFilters value in in the registry:

0. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
1. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

2. Delete UPPERFILTERS and LOWERFILTERS.
3. Exit Regedt32.
4. Shutdown and restart.

Don't eliminate the possibility that one or both drives have simply died.
The CDRW seems especially suspicious. It might have caused the system crash when it died.
