I had Windows ME installed on my computer, and one day I turned my computer on, and it said the registry failed to load. I don't know why that happened, but I fixed that. Then I noticed that my CD-ROM and CD-RW drives didn't work. I got a new cable and that wasn't the problem. So I installed Windows XP, and it detected the CD-ROM drive, and that now works. However, the computer still fails to recognize the CD-RW drive. How can I make it detect that too? Thanks

Does the bios recognize the drive? Check all cables, make sure the jumper is okay, make sure the ide pins are not bent.

If the drive is not detected in the bios and everything else looks okay, either the drive is dead or you have a problem with the ide channel.

If you can, try the drive in a different pc to know for sure.

BIOS does not recognize the drive, and the secondary IDE controller is enabled and working in BIOS and in the device manager. Before I had the problem, the CD-ROM drive was on the master connector, and the CD-RW on the slave connector. Now, if it is set up that way, neither drives work. The CD-ROM drive will only work if it is on the master, with nothing on the slave. If I put the CD-RW on the master though, it doesn't work. I've tried 3 different cables now, and the pins are not bent, and the jumpers are the same as they were when it worked (on cable select).
