Hey all,
My father in law recently gave me his old P3 system which I have decided to turn into a learning computer for my three year old son.
To make it his own I plan on painting and modding the case in the theme of bugs/frogs and getting some speakers, keyboard, mouse to match.
Any idea on good tools I can use to mod (cut into) the case with?

This is a unique sounding question. I would personally use a jig saw with a fine blade on a metal case and a stanley knife to cut designs into the plastic prior to sawing. You can get window perspex fairly cheap and you will only need a small sheet of it, securing it to a hole could be accomplished with some capped bolts (the kind that come with a little dome that you put on afterwards so you cant see the head)
its fairly straightforward if you have had any experience using the tools in question.
Dont leave any open holes in the case though.

Sweet. Thanks for the information. I believe that I have access to all of those tools. I really can't wait to get started on this project. Perhaps I'll share some pics on here once completed (if you all care) :).

If you can also get hold of a dremel with some attachments this would, in some cases, make the job a little easier.
Remember, when modding, double check everything BEFORE you start to cut :p
AMD Athlon 64 FX-55
WinXP Pro. WinXP Pro x64
Nvidia:6800GT
Dane Electronic Pro. Dual 1024MB 400MHz RAM
Tagan 480Watt PSU: 28Amps on +12volt rail.
Asus A8V Deluxe "WiFi" M/Board

Just one word of caution. Before you start any cutting, remove all the components from the case, motherboard, disk drive, power supply. When you have finished all the cutting give the case a good clean to get rid off all the swarfe.
It only needs one small grain of metal to get into the wrong place and you have a short circuit.

You might also want to consider that this is illegal.
For example, if you are in the U.S. there are stringent regulations known mostly as "Part 15" that regulate RF emissions. The entire reason that computers are in metal cases, and come with metal "blanks" originally in the empty drive bays, is to prevent RF interferance to other services, including such things as "me" and my short wave/ amateur listening, the local "taxi" or what others that use two way radio services, including police, fire, and EMS.
The "RF" noise floor is high enough without doing this "window" nonsense, and the fact is, the "I" may very well cause problems with your computer because of this--every time I fire up the 'ol 1500 watts.

I wouldn't call the "window" thing nonsense. It's called a hobby. A lot of hobbies are not cost effective, logical, etc. Besides, I want to create something unique for my son.
I will take into consideration what you have said above though. I certainly don't want to interfere with anything you have mentioned.
All that aside, I apprectiate everyone's comments. They have been very helpful and pointed me in the right direction.

Some useful guides/ideas, here (eg 'paintshop' your case)http://guides.pimprig.com/
http://www.coolercases.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=161& a neon 'led' lit fan sets off the effect of a windowed case nicely,
also check out the etched sides you can buy saves a lot of time, may be similar in a shop near you.
