card for digital camera wont read

I just bought a digital camera about 9 mnths ago and everything was great. But when I try to use my card it comes up with an error message saying that it cannot read it. A talked to a guy at a computer store and he stated there may be some software out there to help clean up and correct this problem.
The Camera is a Nikkon CoolPix 3500. Any advice on what might have caused this. This problem started when I had to get new re-chargeable batteries. Any help would be great. I was told the problem is the card. Is there a way I can get the images off the card that is damaged.

Look for a setup option for the card in your camera. This will format the card and make it usable again. You'll loose all the pics. Good Luck

To attemp to recover the pics you could try some disk recovery software, other wise a format is the only choice. Next time don't take pictures when the batttery is low. It takes several swconds to save an image.
