Cant shut off PC from case Power switch

July 17, 2009 at 20:06:12
Specs: Windows XP
i am unable to shut down the pc from the power switch. the only way i am able to turn off the computer is by turning off the atx power supply.

I am trying to troubleshoot the issue, and replace the faulty hardware. Would this be a motherboard issue ? power supply issue or a power switch issue on the case ?

May be BIOS settings. There are some choices in the BIOS for how to restart.

The power switch on an ATX case is for turning it on. If you want to turn it off via the switch, you need to press the button & hold it in until the system shuts down. You may have to hold it for 5-10 seconds.

There is also a setting in the Power Option under Advanced as to what to do when the power button is pressed while Windowes is running. The options are swtich off, hibernate, or standby or do nothing.

thanks - i have tried holding it down for 5-10 seconds and no luck. non of the buttons are responsive - not even the reset button. it looks like something might be wrong with the motherboard - and as i stated before, i am not even able to post - nothing on the screen.

the cpu fan, video card fan are on when i turn on the power supply switch.

Have the switches previously worked as they should? If not, then the case to motherboard wiring may not be connected correctly.

ATX power switches are momentary contact type. If the switch is sticking in, that can cause problems. I have one that occasionally sticks in.

The BIOS settings in the BIOS for the computer I am currently using has a setting in Power Options to determine how the computer is shut down.

Going back to how you need to shut down, are you stating that you can't go to Start> Turn off computer, and use that to shout down?
