I can't shut down my computer using XP start button|turn off. I can turn it off with the power button. This only happens when the (newly installed SBC Siemens Speedstream 4100) DSL modem is connected to the (newly installed Linksys Etherfast 10/100) LAN card. A SBC Customer Support guy gave me the default answere when they can't solve a problem: It's the net card. But is it? I don't really have a problem using the power button to shut down, but would like to find out what's causing this. Anyone else have a similar problem? ..Bill/Los Angeles I am like a box of chockolates

Are you logged on as Admin when this happens? If not, boot into Admin account, and see if you have the same problem. Also, boot into Safe Mode to see if Shutdown works from there. Let us know if the symptoms change... Can you logoff without shutting down? Can you restart with the Start button? If you can't logoff, and can't restart, check this link:
