cant see desktop after logging on

Specs: Windows 7 home premium, intel centrino 2.1ghz/ 4 gb ram
I have windows dual boot with Ubuntu.when I boot windows I am having display until logon screen.after logging I can't see the desktop.i can only see the cursor and nothing else.i am not even able to properly shutdown the system henceforth.but when I boot Ubuntu everything is working fine for me....i can see the desktop even in windows safe mode....i am confused on what went wrong and couldn't solve this problem....somebody please help me in overcoming this problem..

You should be able, to start the TaskManager by pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE.
Take a look at the Process tab and search for Explorer.exe.
If it isn't there, you can click on File, New Task and type in explorer.exe.
This should bring up your desktop screen.

After that I suggest to take a look at the eventlog and search for any hint on why the explorer doesn't get started.
Also check, which programs are started automatically during system startup.
