I am attempting to slave my old HDD to my new computer in order to transfer files. My new HDD is a WD 120GB 7200RPM SATA, and currently has no jumper. The old HDD is a WD 40GB 7200RPM IDE jumpered to Slave. I can see the old HDD in Device Manager, drivers are present, and everything there appears to be normal. However, it does not show up in My Computer, and I am not able to access it.

Even though I am told that it is not necessary to have a jumper on the new HDD, might this be the problem?

Jude

I should have mentioned that the new system is up and running with XP Home on the new HDD and 98SE on the old. Sorry for the omission.

Jude, Unless the old drive were also a SATA, I believe that it would be jumpered as master on the IDE port or jumperless for cable select.

Nope,

we tried that already. We also tried changing IDE channels to no avail.

Jude,

I have an E-mail in to my WD rep and I will contact you when he gets back to me. I'll keep looking in the meantime and perhaps someone here will kick in somthing.

Try removing the IDE cable for the two optical drives completely. I read that some motherboards (although not Intels) may have trouble with that.

I would also again try it that way as master, slave and not jumoered at all.

Dude, I have the same EXACT problem. MY WD1200 with XP installed can't see my seagate ST340823A 40 gig drive (win98) when the seagate is a slave. The ONLY way to see the seagate in XP is to place it as a slave behind my Plextor CDR drive. I have a Gigabyte GA-7VAX MOBO. Your solution is my solution. I'll let you know what I find.
