can`t open one of the partitions disk D:

Specs: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, 2 GHz / 2046 MB
Suddenly one of the partition showing this message when i try to open it.
D:\ is not accessible
the file or directory is corrupted an unreadible

In the properties section shows 0 bytes used and free and that it working fine on error says windows can`t access.
I don`t know if i format the disk it will help not i would like if first try to get some of valuable files i f`got and then if there is no other choice i format it.
So please what i have to do to fix it ?

Hi me again
I tried to format it but it won`t
And i notice that its not ntfs but raw so i think that why it won`t format. i
Is there a way to change the computer configuration for just once or then i redo the normal setting so i can do the format
please can someone help me

DON'T attempt to format again if you need to recover data.

You can try a number of things. First one is to use a live version of Linux to copy the files. Linux works differently than Windows so it MAY be able to read the partition.

Knoppix is a version I use. Knoppix installs to and runs from ONE CDR/DVDR. The download is 696MB so you need a fast connection and of course burning capability.

A program called testdisk MAY be able to repair the partition so you can use it again without reformatting. I recommend copying personal files before trying testdisk. Links to both below. If using testdisk be sure to read the tutorials first.
