Can't make cdrom drives work

August 20, 2011 at 06:34:29
Specs: Windows Vista business, phenom 2
dvd drives not initialising after cleaning dust out with suction cleaner. One drive is sata, the other is pata. Neither will read CDs or DVDs since. Have tried with instalation discs, no joy. Have another pata CD-ROM that works on a spare desktop but that does not work either. Tried an external sata HDD and it is not recognised when plugged into a rear USB port. All thee have power ok but none are seen!
AsRock mobo N68C with Phenom 2 x4 9050 which behaved ok when installed until I sucked the dust out of the rom drives. Anybody got any ideas? Thank you, Ray

What's a "suction cleaner"? Do you mean a vacuum? Vacuums should not be used on electical components due to the static charge that builds up in the hose. You may have fried the drives or an ESD (electro-static discharge) may have followed the cable, into the motherboard, & fried the controller. If that's the case, the motherboard will have to be replaced.
