Hi,

I was given a system that originally had a corrupted registry, numerous viruses, and a bad cmos battery.

I installed a new battery, partitioned and formatted the drive and installed 98se on one partition and 2K on another.

The board, gave little clue on the make and model number other than it is a socket 370 and the following printed atop the northbridge heatsink- 'PC133 GFXcel'. Doing a search I come to find out it's a PCchips board model number M578LMR.

Using the drivers provided from both PCchips and SIS, they will not install. The other drivers , Modem, Lan, sound, etc. installed without a hitch, and are working properly.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Tony

That may be the correct board, but there are others that use the "PC133 GFXcel". Try looking at the BIOS string at the bottom of the screen during bootup...the model number is usually displayed. If not, try using CPUZ or Everest Home Edition

You didn't say if the machine is up and running but if it is then the best bet is to get MSINFO or EVEREST (lots of other info programs as well). These programs will tell you what you have running, make, model...

Thanks,

Tried everest, didn't give me a clue. Doesn't everest rely upon registered entries in windows anyhow?

Looking at the numbers you posted kinda looks like a BIOSTAR branded mother board, do as jam pointed out and check the bios string and go from there, post back any more info you may have.....One other thing does the mother board have both a Lan connection and a MODEM RISER card attached to it ?

Keep the old stuff running

Everest doesn't ID either the motherboard or the video adapter?

How is the adapter currently identified in display properties?

He Linux,

I'm 99.9% sure it's a PCCHips board, the manual that I downloaded looked exactly like the board on hand. I'll check the BIOS string later this evening after my son's football game.

BTW, it does have both LAN and Modem risers which both operate properly.

One other time I worked on a PCCHIps board and had a bear of a time getting the display drivers to load, when I uninstalled all devices and reinstalled they worked. I'll try that also.

Thanks,

Tony

ECS, Amptron and probably others used Pcchips boards with only minor bios modifications. But the drivers for any of those clones should work OK. So it shouldn't matter if it's an actual pcchips board. Besides, since the other drivers installed OK, you've probably got the right ones.

Only reason I mentiomed it as I have a Biostar MOBO M598LMR and thought maybe they were closer than they are, only thing I wanted to point out was there was a bad run of BIOS chips with them and some FLASHES to it would leave you with a dead mother board...Good luck and let us know how it works out.....

Keep the old stuff running

Hi,

I finally got it!! When loading the drivers, instead of going to 'Search for' I went and used Windows driver database on the C: and selected SIS S3, then I was able to give the correct path to the driver I had on disc, otherwise it would give me the standard display driver.

The SIS 630/730 chipset is crap!!!

Thanks to all who responded.
