I am trying to install a "U.S. Robotics 56K PCI Faxmodem V.92" for a friend on his WinME machine.
Unfortunately, he has lost the instructions. I tried the usual way of installing it by going to Add New Hardware and using the drivers provided on the Driver CD to install it. I installed it to the Communications Port. This went well, but when I try to connect to the internet, the modem is not recognized. The correct model appears in Control Panel/Modems, but usually get an error message when trying to access its properties.....Can anyone please help??? Thanks..
(Site for Modem specs - http://www.usr.com/products/home/home-product.asp?sku=USR5660A)

Remove it from device manager. Delete the drivers from add remove programs.
Delete the usrobotics folder from hardrive.Reboot and let windows detect it. When it asks for the driver let it search your cdrom. It should install fine that way.
If not try it in a different slot make sure it is seated tightly.

Robbie,
I erased everything from the computer relating to the drivers of the modem. I restarted the PC, but Windows AUTOMATICALLY detects and installs the drivers for the modem, and gives me no options towards it.I think the issue deals with installing another component, an "emulator" (instructions that I found on the internet said something about installing 2 parts to the modem). When Windows installs the modem drivers automatically, it only installs 1 part. I installed the 2nd one (emulator, I believe) it gave me a corruption error when viewing its Properties on Control Panel/Modems....

The installation instructions are here :
http://www.usr.com/support/5660a/5660a-files/5660a-ig.pdfThere is also a troubleshooting section. If all else fails, try a different slot. Good luck.

Once installed, go to Control Panel and select the Modem option. It should be listed there by name. Select it, click Diagnostics and click "More Info..". This will read information from the modem and its drivers.
That modem is a Soft modem made by Conexant and sold under the USRobitics name by 3Com, and is no where as good as the "old USRobotics" modems. Not worth buying. Those modems do not support V44 compression (if you can find an ISP that does). And they do not work all that well unless you have very good phone lines and are close to the CO. Conexant does not support their drivers very well. And ALL the work is done by the system processor as there is no processor of any kind on that modem.
Only the External USRobotics are worth buying nowadays, and they do not support V44 compression.
The best modem chip sets made today are the Agere chips sets based on the old Lucent (Bell Labs) chips sets. And they have good drivers. If you know where to find them, the Agere Soft modem SV92P chip modems can be had for under $12. Their good 1648C chip with DSP (digital Signal Processor) cards are under $20. A good web source of one of these is ModemSite.com. These modems support V.92 and V44 compression, work great and lightning does not wipe them out as quickly. I use one on my system for backup for Cable.
