can't install os on a compaq LP

i have a compaq contura 410cx
I don't know much about this but i have an external cdrom connected to the laptop. and tried to install from there but to no avail. the lp will read from the cdrom and will look like it will install (win98) but it doesn't i can't get in to the bios neither i know it needs a operating system. but how do i install it? can anyone help? thankx Regards to who ever helps
