Subject: Can't install an OSOS: Win 2KCPU/Ram: 256 |
Comment: I just built a computer; it can load a Live CD just fine; however I can't install an OS to the HDD. the HDD is new, just checked with spinrite. I did a mem test and the RAM is good. tried installing 98SE, Win2K, WinXP, and Xubuntu linux; same thing happens every time; the OS install can format the HDD, but then will freeze or, in some windows cases, get a blue screen of death. What could be causing this? bad IDE controller?

Reply: (edit)Go to the hard drive mfg site. The offer diag software. If not see about ultimate boot cd for tests or IBM's (hitachi) diag for hard drives. It could be jumpers, cables, virus, controller, bios settings, power supply, and maybe a few other things. I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

Reply: (edit)Did you bench test before putting everything together ? Maybe it is time to dismantle and start with basic testing, unless you have a SATA drive which requires the SATA controller chipset driver ?

Reply: (edit)I'll see what Western Digital has for a diag utility. Also; I have not bench tested it. What would be the "ideal" way to go about that?
