Can't get past the black screen

Hi, my computer has had some problems recently, it has error messages quite frequently and crashes for no reason. This time it crashed and when it started up it went to the black screen which asks if you want to start up in safe mode, last known working configuration etc etc. I have tried all options and none of them work, it sounds like it it whirring into action but then it comes back to the black screen. I really need to get my stuff off the harddrive at the very least. Please help!
