I got a HP Vectra VE i8 that i'm trying to install a modem in for someone, it didn't come with one when they got it.
Now get this... I can install the modem, boot up and it detects it as PCI Communications Device. When it asks for drivers it says windows was unable to locate driver. I have tried many different modems and they all do the same thing. I have tried downloading drivers for each of them and still same thing.
I have another older compter with windows 98 Se and I can install any of the modems into it, and it boots and detects the modem, and installs the drivers just using the win98 cd.
These modems will all work fine. I even tried using a old 56k ISA modem by us robotics and it wouldn't install either in the HP but the other 98 computer recognized it and installed drivers too.
Now get this I can plug in a US Robotics Sportster External serial modem and the HP will recognize and install the drivers fine.
I have tried different pci slots and still doesn't work. Heck I even tried a 10/100 Network Card in the HP, plugged it in and it recognized it,loaded drivers fine and worked.
Is there some setting that I must change in bios or windows that will let it work with internal modems? I've never worked with a Vectra before I figured they would be like any other HP or computer.
This one is a stump for me.
Thanks

Windows has the drivers for some devices, but not all. Just determine the 'make and model' of the modem and do a search for it online. You must install the 'exact' driver for that particular modem and Operating System.

I know I got the proper modem drivers as i've downloaded new ones from driverguide.com and those too work on the non problem pc.
I even tried removing a fairly new modem I have that came boxed with the driver cd and I know it works as i am using it now. It too wouldn't take the drivers.
I'll check out the link, thanks rhi.

Well i finally found a modem with a driver that would work on the monster. It must have just been picky with certain modems or something.
