Can't get fax to send or receive

Specs: Windows XP
Dell AIO fax does not work after being hooked up to a modem rather than directly to the wall jack. What can I do. I bought a High Speed USB data/fax/voice modem and am not sure if that's what I should have done. I am willing to buy a new fax machine but do not want to run into the same problem again. Or do I just need to get my wall jacks working again and cancel my phone service and go back to a non-modem based phone service? Help! It's really affecting my business every single day and the rep just thinks I don't know what I am talking about. I am at my wit's end!!

Your Dell machine has a built-in modem - putting another one in
line, or whatever you've done, will not work. You need to get the
wall jack working again as it's the only way to be able to send a
fax, with either the Dell, your USB modem or any new machine
you buy.

Thanks SO much for confirming what I thought. No one else thought that it had to go directly into the wall jack. I even got a new fax machine because they said the fax was broken...did not know Dell faxes had an internal modem. All I know is when I had Comcast back before they switched to a modem, the fax worked fine. Then I switched to Quest, which was a modem and the fax did not work so I switched back to Comcast thinking that the carrier was the reason. Comcast during this time switched to a modem so my fax did not work again! Then I switched to Clear....again, a modem...fax did not work. This is the only reason that I came up with "modem, no fax", "wall jack, fax worked". I am truly greatful to get this validation after SO many phone guys rolled their eyes at me!
