Can't get External Monitor to display laptop boot-up screen

Specs: Windows 7
I'm currently trying to Factory Reset my laptop; I am using an external monitor because my LT monitor is broken. When starting the computer, the external monitor doesn't start displaying until it has reached the log-in screen. Is there a way to see the entire boot-up and or at least the Factory Reset process? I've tried starting the F.R. process while logged into Windows, however, it too doesn't display on the external monitor.

Depending on model of Laptop it is usually a key combination "Fn + F4 or F5" to toggle Laptop Screen, Both Screens, External Only....

ARM Devices the future. Windows have accepted the fact!

Not sure if it worked. Should I see anything verifying that it was successful?

Downside to dealing with laptops. The bios in them is not geared to using any display other than the inbuilt screen. The toggle keys mentioned above are a software driven switch reliant on the operating system being loaded first.

Catch22. If there is a BIOS option to use the external display you need to be able to see the option to select it. The only way to see the option (if it exists) is on the inbuilt display. Therefore fix the screen first. ( This then renders pointless the possible switch to an external monitor)
