I bought a refurbished laptop from Gateway about one year ago this month. At first, the Cd-rom drive worked ok - It was a bit slow, but nothing to drastic. Unfortunately now, it does not work at all. I often have a hard time just getting the drive to open and when I do get it to open, when I put a CD in, it never reads it. It acts as if I didn't even put a CD in.
I have tried downloading drivers for it, tried cleaning the drive - but nothing has seemed to works. Any thoughts or any ideas as to what's wrong?

Check the BIOS on startup. If the drive is not detected, it is most likely dead, though it could also be that something came loose.
If it is detected in the BIOS, you have a Windows problem.

I would reseat the power connector going into the CDRom drive also "I often have a hard time just getting the drive to open...." The power connector may not be making good contact with the pins on the CDRom drive.
