Comment:

I made a password on a AST Ascentia 800n laptop computer, and am unable to enter it when the laptop boots (as in nothing appears on screen). I tried discharging the CMOS battery but that did not work as I learned soon after that the password is not stored in the CMOS. I know that the keyboard is good and I know what the password is. When the 'Enter User Password' screen appears the three LEDs in the right corner of the laptop start flashing one after another (from left to right). What does this mean?

How can I get into the system and/or reset the BIOS password?

Meh.

Hi, Did you leave the battery out 2-3 hours? Some systems take a long time to discharge the CMOS Caps. Designed to let you change the batt without losing your setup. Some give you time to take the old batt to the store with you. You are right - some machines do not use CMOS Setup storage but keep it on the Hard Drive. Try to reset again if you didn't leave the batt out long enough.

Good Luck, Jim

Ok, I'll try that in a few days. After disassembling the laptop for about the fifth time today i'm tired as you can probably imagine.

Ok, I pulled the battery and i'm going to try letting it discharge overnight. I'll let you know how it went tommorow.

It worked, although the hard drive is now corrupted. Oh well, nothing a Fdisk and Format can't fix. :)

Thank you!

Meh.
