Subject: can't disable graphicsOS: windows xpCPU/Ram: cyrix 233/256mb |
Comment: i got a email from the company who made my computer, seems that it's impossible to disable the on-board graphics in current bios. if i update my bios from www.wimsbios.com will that solve my problem? if not, what could I possibly do to add a graphics card or to speed up graphics-hungry games?

Reply: (edit)It may not be in the bios. Check the documentation for your mobo. Your onboard video could be disabled by a jumper. Stay away from bios update unless you really need to. If you do, research everything you need very carefully before you attempt it.

Reply: (edit)I don't see any jumper for it, so I guess I just can't... I don't find it comfortable to upgrade my bios anyway, too expensive, it's not worth it. Anyway, is there a way to speed up my computer for the games? Tim

Reply: (edit) My system ,which had i810 intergrated graphics also had no option to disable it in the BIOS ! I installed an ATI RADEON PCI (no AGP slot) I disabled the onboard video in device manager under Display Adapters and System Devices, do not try remove in device manager , because on reboot the system will detect the onboard video and prompt you to reinstall it , disable only. Also the directions on installation of the card , had me disable the onboard video ,reboot and let Windows automatically install the standard VGA Software/Drivers, which it did ! I then proceeded with installation of the PCI Graphics card. Inthe BIOS I set it to init display frist -PCI ! If you have an AGP slort go with an AGP card ! Good Luck,Nick

Reply: (edit)Why would you pay for a BIOS update? They're free! You just go to the mobo manufacturer's website & download the latest version. As for disabling the onboard graphics...there are some boards that automaticlly do this when a new videocard is detected. Also, if there's a setting in the BIOS to allocate a certain amount of memory for graphics, just set it to zero.

Reply: (edit)Your motherboard is the key here. Can it take an AGP card? Usually, you can find a way to disable it, by reading around on the web, based on the manuf.
