Subject: Can't detect primary masterOS: WinXP ProCPU/Ram: P3-500 / 384mb |
Comment: Hi, I've a new 120gb WD as my primary master. Sometimes the bios can't detect it. Other times it works fine. If it says failed, I would need to wait a few minutes, then shut down and restart to make it detectable. If I shut down right away after it says failed, it's still wouldn't work. It happened once after it logged into windows, a message poped up saying no disk in drive. I've updated the bios and the WD diagnostic said it's error free. I suspect it has to do with the generic 300w PSU. But my cpu and vga card aren't power hungry either. So, i'm not too sure anymore. Any help would be great. Thx.

Reply: (edit)What other IDE devices do you have & how are they configured? Hopefully you're using the master jumper setting & not cable select. WDC has a different setting for master (single) & master (w/slave), so make sure you have that set correctly. And make sure you're using an 80-wire IDE cable. Reply: (edit)The jumper is set to primary single master and I'm using an 80-wire IDE cable. My cd-rom is secondary.

Either could be bad so try a different IDE cable, and power connection. Btw options are: Single, Master, Slave or CS. Should be set to Single when using only one drive on controller.

Reply: (edit)Take a close look at the power connector. Make sure that none of the pins are spread open too much. Try another power cable if you have a spare.
