I was burning DVD's & CD's through Nero 8 a few weeks ago, but now I tried to burn a dvd, it doesn't burn at all. The process starts but there is no sound like it usually makes when burn process begins. I checked device manager, there is nothing disabled. I am using gateway m320 notebook. Win XP. The dvd rom reads any disc perfectly but it has stopped burning, what is going on, what happened? Any drivers I should update & how ? Any help appreciated.

Are you sure you have a DVD burner? Have you ever burned DVD's with it before? You *may* have a combo drive...DVD-ROM / CD-RW. To be able to burn DVD's, you'd need a DVD-RW / CD-RW drive.

Look at what's printed on the front of the drawer...is it DVD-ROM or DVD-RW?

Are these the same brand of dvd's.
Sound like a dumb question but my burners are real picky.

I suspect some Windows updates cause those kinds of problems. Other causes are installing certain burning programs, camera software, scanner software.

Two issues can affect the function of a burner. One is ASPI layer drivers. The second involves upper and lower filters.

Google for those terms. If you know exactly when the problem began you could look at updates installed just prior to that.
