cant access my ext. harddrive

Specs: Windows Vista
When i plug in my ext. harddrive it registers , but when i want to open it, the message says that the drive is not accessible. I think i changed the parameters on my harddrive from shared to not shared, but since i cannot open i cannot switch it back. what do i do?

There are two components that make up a USB external hard drive. First is the enclosure. That will show even if there is no hard drive installed. The second one is the actual hard drive.

Verify the actual hard drive is being configured by going to Disk Management and looking for it. If it shows then you may need to take ownership of the files/ folders in Vista.
