What's the purpose of this BIOS update?

The 1st thing you need to do is access the BIOS & correct your settings. I don't know what key Gateway uses...maybe DEL, F1, F2 ? And you have to hit the key at the right time during bootup. I usually just tap the key continuously as soon as the PC begins to boot. Once you're in, change the setting for the floppy...what is it set to B instead of A? And change the boot order making the floppy the 1st.

to what exactly are you referring as BIOS?

...you get to the BIOS by pressing delete(most odf the time) while the computer is staring up.

What happens when you press the appropriate key to enter the BIOS?

Del, F1, F2, F10 are the most common... So, which one are you using? The system should also show you before POST what key to press to enter the BIOS.

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

If you have made cable changes, and you have a cable with two connectors, the A: drive should be connected to the connector on the end of the cable (past the twist). The middle connector is for the b: drive.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

having just finished work on my sisters Gateway you need to press F1 after turning on power when you see the GAteway logo do this repeatedly and you can access BIOS check on the screen for the boot order and make sure floppy is first followed by CD ROM and then Harddrive also on my sisters I installed a floppy drive but I had to manually set it to turn on the floppy it didnt do it by itself if you have 2 floppys shon in bios disable the secondary one and then F10 save and exit restart and it sjould work.
